General Chat / Re: adverts
« on: November 03, 2013, 03:21:23 pm »
Part of having a free forum. You either get adverts or some other negative feature to put up with for a freebie.

Seems to be a recent development, so they've probably changed the way they display them to something less subtle. If anyone want to pay for an advert free forum feel free! I can't afford it (and I'm ok with adverts if it means a free service).

Help / How to send a private message on this forum
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:50:55 pm »
There is a private message function on this forum, enabling members to drop a quick message (like an email) to other members.

Primarily, this is useful for contacting the Administrator or any moderators of the forum regarding any issues, but it's obviously useful too for private discussions between members.

This is a step by step guide on how to use this feature.

1) Hover your mouse over the 'My Messages' button at the top of the page (see image below for example of this)

2) Click on 'Send a Message' - this will take you straight to compose a message (see image below).
3) In the 'To' area, start to type the name of the member you would like to send the message to (you can add more than one member). As you type, that member name will appear in a box below (see image below for example). Click on the correct member name as it appears below, and that member will be selected.

4) Write your message and send as you would do a normal email.

From the 'My Messages' area you can also view your own inbox, send messages, search through your inbox and also change the settings.

If you click on 'Change Settings' you can choose how you are notified when you receive a new message (you can set it to 'pop-up' on screen for example) to your inbox, who is allowed to send you messages, and more.

Help / I'm a Trader - how can I access the Traders Only section?
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:11:08 pm »
If you have just joined and you are a trader on Gloucester Road (or the top end of Cheltenham Road), there is a 'Traders Only' section of this forum that is not visible to the public, so Traders can discuss Trader Only things.

When you join, you are automatically assumed to be a member of the public, so you will only be seeing the public section of this forum. To be able to access to traders only section, you need to send a message to the forum administrator to let them know that you have joined and that you are a trader. The Administrator will do the rest.

To send a message to the Administrator, just click on 'My Messages' at the top of the page and enter 'gloucesterroadtraders' into the 'To' box so it reaches the right person.

Sometimes, the Admin will spot a trader as soon as they join and do it anyway if they've logged in and spotted it's someone they recognise, but if you can't view the traders section, just send a private message to get approval and admin will look at sorting that out for you as soon as they have a spare moment.

Help / Why can't I reply to a topic? It's saying it's locked?
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:04:24 pm »
Some topics can be 'locked' and this is done so that no replies can be added to it. Help and information posts, such as the post at the top of the list titled 'who can read what' can be locked and stuck to the top of the list. This is done for topics that are information only and don't require replies.

If you have a question related to any topics that are 'locked' so you can't reply to them, simply start a new post in the 'Help' section explaining what you need help with, and someone will get back to you.

The administrator will be on hand to help with any topics, but also, other forum users who have got the hang of it and know how it functions will also be able to jump in and advise.

This forum has a Help section, which contains useful information about using this forum, who can access what parts of it, and using some of the features such as private messaging.

This section can be found under 'General Chat' and is titled 'Help'.... but for a quick shortcut, go to

Help / Who can read these posts? Can anyone see them?
« on: September 21, 2013, 11:42:17 am »
This forum has been designed so it can be used by traders, members of the public, Traders Association Committee members and special guests.

There is a section in this forum for members of the public, and this section can be accessed by any member, and can be viewed by anyone visiting this website. Here anything public can be discussed.

Traders only section

When you first join, you are automatically assumed to be a member of the public. This gives you access to the public message boards. There are special discussion boards that are only visible by traders, and other such members of this forum. In order to access these, you need to have your membership to this forum assigned to the right member type by the administrator. If you are a trader, or GRTA member, please contact admin so your membership on here can be updated to reflect this. You will then have access to the other discussion boards here that are appropriate to you.

Special Guests
Occasionally, special guests might join the forum who are not traders, but have some involvement in that side of Gloucester Road. For example, those involved in the BID scheme, Council, Press or other such people who may need access to some parts of the forum that are not visible to the public. For this, we have a 'special guest' status for those members, so they can view the sections of the forum that are appropriate to them, but not usually visible to the public.

How to have your membership to this forum changed to 'Trader', 'Committee Member' or 'Special Guest' status

If you have just joined and need to access these areas, please contact the board administrator who will take care of this for you. That's all you need to do! There is a private message function on this forum that you can use to do this. At the top of the forum there is a 'My Messages' button. Click on this, then click on 'Send A Message' or 'New Message'. In to 'To' section, start to type 'gloucesterroadtraders' (which is the username of the Administrator) and it will appear below the 'To' box so you can click on it. type the message as you would a normal email.
